Congratulations to Pratik Tailor and Summer O’Dwyer on winning their respective champion of champion matches on Wednesday. Pratik finished a point ahead of Wellington Central with 198.14, while Summer set a new B Grade record of 199.15 (which was also a new PB for her). David Grain finished a point behind Wellington Central in A Grade, Mark Riley finished 3rd in C Grade and Wiko du Toit came 2nd in D Grade (Wellington Central set a new record of 98.8 in D Grade).
The Wellington Association dinner and prizegiving function was held on Saturday night, with Brooklyn shooters receiving a large number of representative badges, date bars, medals and trophies. The club was presented with the Witcomb & Caldwell trophy, the Osmond Shield and the Wright Cup, as well as the Open Grade, B Grade and C Grade interclub shields – this is the full range of WSRA club trophies so well done to our members on such a fantastic result!
What a great turnout for our club prizegiving yesterday – 29 club members plus 5 family/friends and of course one dog! Many thanks to Craig and Ursula for once again hosting this event, and to Meredith for organising the food. The 2016 club members’ achievements booklet, which highlights shooters’ achievements beyond club shooting, has been emailed to members. Congratulations to all on their successes.
The WSRA Business House Challenge is being held on Friday 4 November at 6.30pm. Teams comprise three people and the entry fee is $60 per team with part of the proceeds going back to the clubs. Any help with target changing, range officering, marking, scorekeeping, and coaching would be much appreciated.
A rifle cleaning session will be held in the upcoming weeks (details to be advised soon). If you’ve been using club equipment, please come along to learn how to take care of your rifle to prevent corrosion.
And a working bee to clear gutters, to cut back overhanging trees and to have a general tidy up will be held at our Bell Road building in the upcoming weeks (details to be advised soon). Please come along and help out – the more help we have, the quicker the task will be done. And of course, you’ll get to see where we’ll be shooting in the not too distant future!
This is the final Brooklyn Shooting Update for this season. The club will get under way again in late February/early March with the four-week introduction programme for new shooters. It would be appreciated if you could let us know if you are not intending to shoot next year, particularly if you are using club equipment.
In the meantime, if you would like to shoot during the summer months from mid-November onwards on a Monday evening, please contact Craig Fair, or alternatively if you’d like to have a go at outdoor on Saturday mornings from 9am at the Allen Range in Trentham, please contact David Grain. Otherwise enjoy the off-season and we’ll see you next year.

It was great to see so many (30) at the club for our final shooting day of the indoor season, and 17 for dinner may have broken the record! Thanks to Meredith for organising dinners over the last three years, and to everyone who has helped out on the dinner roster. These have been very popular and are an excellent way to get to know each other in a more informal setting and to catch up on what’s happening in our lives.
Congratulations to the following shooters on scoring a new PB yesterday: Summer O’Dwyer 100.9(!!), Oscar Robinson 99.3, Arnold Chia 90.1, and Matthew Canlas 180.1 (20-shot PB).
As part of the wind-down for the season, 11 D Graders took part in a 90-second shoot. Interestingly many of the scores were not hugely different from their normal scores which tends to suggest that they are doing everything right – natural point of aim, sighting, relaxing, shot release, etc. Top shot was Wiko du Toit with 94.2 followed by Georgia Karantze on 91.3.
Once again there were many really good 20-shot scores shot yesterday, in particular Pratik Tailor 199.15 and 198.16, Evan Little 197.13, David Grain 197.11 and Dianne Grain 196.7, and in the lower grades Oscar Robinson 192.6, Mark Riley 191.7 and Wiko du Toit 189.1. The highest five D Graders this week were Oscar Robinson 99.3, Wiko du Toit 95.3, Melchior Meares 94.4, Sarah May 93.2 and Rhys Mountain 93.2. Hamish Guthrey and Erin Little were top shots in C Grade, both scoring 95.2. And in the higher grades, Summer O’Dwyer did best with 100.9.
The final indoor shooting event of the season – the champion of champions match – is being held on Wednesday at 8pm. Those involved are Pratik Tailor, David Grain, Summer O’Dwyer, Mark Riley and Wiko du Toit. Good luck!
Outdoor 50m shooting commenced last Saturday with an introductory session. It was great to see a number of Brooklyn shooters giving it a go with very good results, especially as the wind was quite strong and switching a lot. If anyone has a shooting mat they are not using over the summer months that outdoor shooters could borrow, please let David know. Outdoor shooting is held each Saturday morning (except Saturday 22 October) from 9am to 12.30pm at the Allen Range, Dante Road, Trentham. Contact David for more details, or to be added to the outdoor email list.
If you have ordered tickets for the WSRA prizegiving dinner on Saturday, please make payment of $35 per ticket into the club’s bank account using your name as a reference on or before Wednesday. Doors open at 6pm with dinner served at 6.30pm.
Thanks to those who have met the deadline for grading returns. It is pleasing to see a large number of members moving up at least one grade next season. There’s just a few more returns outstanding – if you haven’t yet sent through your grading return could you please do so urgently to enable the club return to be compiled and sent to TSNZ.
And finally, our annual club prizegiving and barbecue will be held at Craig Fair’s house, 329 Karori Road, from 4.30pm on Sunday 16 October. Please advise Meredith if you will be attending. If you won trophies last year, please ensure they are engraved, polished and returned on Sunday. If you won a trophy at an event during the year, bring these along as well for our club winners photo.
Upcoming events:

It is with much sadness that we note the passing of Tony Macklin, ex-President of Brooklyn Smallbore Rifle Club, on 25 September at the very young age of 65. Tony took a keen interest in the club and was involved in the initial redevelopment of the Bell Road facility into our next range. He was also a much valued search and rescue member, tramper and deerstalker. Our thoughts go to his sons, Joe and Nick, at this difficult time.
As noted in Saturday’s email, our college shooters did extremely well in Blenheim with five being selected for the North Island secondary schools team, and three making it to the New Zealand team. The level of shooting was very high – the cut-off for the North Island team was 95.0, increasing to 95.6 for the New Zealand team. Wiko du Toit was 3rd highest shooter on Day 1. Wellington College finished 2nd and Marsden were 4th out of 19 teams in the competition, and the North Island finished 11 points ahead of the South Island. New PBs were shot by Wiko du Toit 99.7, Oscar Robinson 98.6 and Amalamo Simi 98.3. Summer O’Dwyer was top shot in the New Zealand team, scoring 198. Our six brought home a phenomenal 11 medals between them, as well as a number of certificates. Congratulations to everyone involved, and a huge thanks to our coaches and team managers for the effort they have put in over the year.

Grading returns are due now – please ensure yours is completed and emailed to me by next Monday 10 October. It is the responsibility of every shooter to complete a grading return each season, regardless of whether or not they intend to continue shooting the following year. The club return can only be compiled once every member has sent through their individual return, so please action this promptly.
Next Sunday is our final shooting week this season, a chance to fill in any gaps you may have on the scoreboard. Our graded champions will then compete against other clubs’ graded champions on Wednesday 12 October in the WSRA Champion of Champions match.
If you have not yet ordered tickets for the WSRA prizegiving dinner and wish to attend, please email me this week or add your name to the list at the club on Sunday. Our annual club prizegiving and barbecue will be held at Craig Fair’s house from 4.30pm on Sunday 16 October.

Top shot was Pratik Tailor with 199.17 followed by 199.16 (and for his 10-shot he scored 100.9!). That really is incredibly good shooting – 498.42 out of a possible 500.50. Dianne Grain, David Grain and Summer O’Dwyer finished in 3rd to 5th positions respectively, and Georgia Karantze moved up a place to finish 8th.
It was great to see so many members at the North Island Champs in Palmerston North on Saturday. Congratulations to Craig Fair on his 3rd place in B Grade with an extremely good 391.

So that includes interclub, representative teams, closed champs, school competitions, marksmen’s badges, open champs, etc. The deadline for grading returns is Monday 10 October.
Also many thanks to the large number of members who assisted with range and social area cleaning yesterday. With so many helping, the task was accomplished quickly and done well.

A busy day at the club with 35 shooters. It’s great to see so many turning up regularly, particularly our D Graders with almost full attendance each week. Congratulations to those who shot new PBs during the week: Wiko du Toit 99.5, Sarah May 97.3, Matthew Canlas 96.2 and Georgia Beatson 93.3.
Pratik Tailor scored the best 20-shot score this week – 198.13, and also the best Master Grade 10-shot score of 100.6. Ross Little was highest in A Grade with 98.5. Only an inner separated the top two B Graders – Craig Fair 95.5 and Summer O’Dwyer 95.4, and Mark Riley did best in C Grade with 95.2. In D Grade the top five were Sarah May 97.3, Georgia Karantze 97.3, Oscar Robinson 96.4, Matthew Canlas 96.2, and Amalamo Simi 96.2. The 2016 grading season runs between 1 April and 30 September, so next Sunday is the last opportunity to add to your grading return spreadsheet. Please ensure your spreadsheet is up to date so that it can be forwarded to d.grain@xtra.co.nz as soon as possible after Sunday. The club return needs to be compiled from the individual grading returns and forwarded to TSNZ in October. It looks likely that quite a few of our members will be climbing a grade (and in some cases two grades) – well done on this improvement over the year.
For those who attended one of the WSRA marking courses in July, the final day to return your signed marking course cards is Sunday 2 October. This is a self-squadded match with the only designated squad being for the open interclub event. Shooters involved in more than one team have their same scores count for each event they are in, and therefore shoot a maximum of 2x10. Could those involved in these matches please bring a small plate of food for supper.

Team #1 won the event by a mere six inners ahead of Team #2, while Wellington Central were nine points lower. As in the Wright Cup match, our #1 team scored the best team result since the new targets were introduced. Top shot was Ross Little with 100.8. It was a great evening, with lots of team spirit and support.

The final rounds of the Triple S secondary schools match and the Wellington Closed Champs have now been shot, with results expected later this week.
Only four weeks remain in the club competition so it’s definitely time to get your grading returns up to date. Remember to record all competition cards shot between 1 April and 30 September – this includes club competition, interclub, representative shooting, closed champs, and college matches. Just record the whole numbers, not the inners.

Thanks to Wiko du Toit for providing the following summary of the Triangular Open Grade match held on Saturday: Wellington shot well compared to the other two teams but just fell short of a few points and came 3rd place with a total score of 2881.116, whilst closely following Wairarapa who came 2nd with a total score of 2893.115, and a strong 1st place TSHV team with a total score of 2916.129. Congrats to Craig Fair shooting a 99.1, great atmosphere today in the range. It’s really good to receive reports on matches from those involved.
Full marks to our junior shooters on their proactivity in organising themselves, and their team mates, in Round 2 of the college competition shot yesterday. Thinking ahead and taking responsibility are highly desirable attributes in a club of our size, and much appreciated by our more senior members. Congratulations go to Marsden on scoring the best team score in Round 2 and moving up from 4th position to 2nd to be awarded the runner-up teams trophy. Onslow held their lead from Round 1, finishing three points ahead of Marsden. Wellington College finished in 4th position behind Upper Hutt. Also congratulations to Summer O’Dwyer on winning the top individual trophy and the top girl trophy in this match – starting in 7th place, Summer shot a very impressive 100.6 to finish a point ahead. Seven of our shooters have been selected for the Wellington secondary schools team to shoot next Sunday against other regions from around New Zealand (Summer O’Dwyer, Wiko du Toit, Georgia Karantze, Luisa Kristen, Shambhavi Choudhury, Jack MacCormick and Oscar Robinson) – well done! And thanks to our helpers David Grain, Evan Little, Craig Fair, Mark Robinson and Dianne Grain.

Brooklyn have won all three segments of the interclub competition. The B Grade and C Grade competitions were won by just two points each which were scored from bonus points shot by Summer O’Dwyer in Round 3 and Wiko du Toit in Round 6. Brooklyn won each match in the Open Grade competition and also scored bonus points from Pratik Tailor’s 200 in Round 5. Thanks to everyone who took part in interclub throughout the season. Brooklyn will now compete on Friday 16 September against the three winning teams in the Hutt Valley interclub competition.
Congratulations to Meredith Ackrill on being selected for the New Zealand Open team and the New Zealand Women’s team, and also to Ross Little on his selection to the New Zealand junior team. The North Island open team won their match against the South Island but only 8 points separated the two teams (out of a possible 8000). The North Island women’s and junior teams also had close matches but the South Island proved too strong, winning by 6 points and 4 points respectively. Meredith Ackrill was top shot for the North Island women’s team, scoring 397.23.
It was great to see so many shooters have a go at a 20-shot target this week. The top score in the 20-shot competition was recorded by Pratik Tailor 197.11 followed by Dianne Grain 196.9. David Grain started a bit rough on his 20 but finished strongly with 100.9 on the second card. Best shot in the higher grades was Evan Little with 100.7. Summer O’Dwyer top-scored in B Grade with 96.5, and Greg Mason’s 97.4 was best in C Grade. The top four shooters in D Grade were Oscar Robinson with a new PB of 98.4, Inge Little 95.2, Yiannis Fam 94.3 and Amalamo Simi 94.2, while Wiko du Toit did best in the 20-shot competition with 192.7 closely followed by Georgia Karantze on 191.8. Seven D Graders also achieved 20-shot scores in the 180s.
The Titipounamu match was held on Tuesday. Titipounamu means “rifleman”. This is a match for A Grade shooters and below from around the country and comprises a 10-shot and a 20-shot card. Top shot for Wellington was Dianne Grain with 294.15. This year the Wellington team score was a little lower than in previous years – full results will be available next month.
Results from Round 5 of the closed champs competition have been distributed. Meredith Ackrill remains in 2nd place in Master Grade, the top three places in A Grade are currently held by Brooklyn shooters (Dianne Grain, David Grain, Jess Fair), and Summer O’Dwyer continues to lead B Grade. Mark Riley moves up to 2nd position in C Grade, and Georgia Karantze and Wiko du Toit are leading D Grade. Brooklyn shooters also currently hold the top three places in the women’s competition (Dianne Grain, Meredith Ackrill, Summer O’Dwyer), as well as the top three places in the junior competition (Summer O’Dwyer, Georgia Karantze, Jess Fair). The deadline for the final round is Sunday 4 September.
Probably the most exciting events for club shooting are the Osmond Shield and Wright Cup matches, which are being held concurrently on Saturday 3 September. The Osmond Shield teams are made up of eight shooters from each club, four of whom must be B Grade or lower, while the Wright Cup match comprises teams of six shooters graded C and D Grade. All scores count in the Osmond Shield match and the best five count in the Wright Cup match. One shooter per team shoots on each squad, and teams should be in as close to seeded order as possible. Brooklyn will be entering two teams in each of these matches and team lists will be emailed later this week.

Congratulations to Alex and Michael Grain on their wedding last Saturday. Alex looked stunning and Michael was calmness personified. There were a great many laughs throughout the day, particularly when two guests chose the wrong door to arrive through, ending up where Michael and groomsmen stood, just minutes before Alex walked down the aisle. We wish the happy couple all the best for their future together. |

Brooklyn shooters finished in the top three positions for Wellington at the Interassociation D Grade match held on Monday (Wiko du Toit, Amalamo Simi, Oscar Robinson) – well done! And congratulations to Mila Ballara on shooting a new PB of 94.1 in this match.

Wellington faced Eastern Force in the semi-finals of the NDC competition on Thursday. While having the best overall total score (our best this season), and our juniors winning easily, our composite and open sections succumbed to the stronger Eastern Force team. This meant Wellington scored 5 points against Eastern Force’s 9 points. Eastern Force will now compete against Southland in the final, with the winner of this match competing in the promotion/regulation match against Hutt Valley. Congratulations to Meredith Ackrill and Jess Fair on their 100.8 and 100.7 respectively, and to Wiko du Toit on his new 20-shot PB of 194.12. Many thanks to Luisa Kristen for coming along to coach our newer shooters.

Our Wellington College team are currently in 2nd position behind Onslow, while our Marsden team are 4th behind Upper Hutt. Only seven points separate the top four teams.
