That's it! The competition for 2018 is over and we have the winners...

Well done to Shania Harrison-Lee - our new SSS Champion for 2018 and, yet again, to Ashburton College - our top team for 2018.

Round 4 has just finished and the results are in...

After leading on all of the first three rounds, a brilliant final round score of 199.17 meant Shania Harrison-Lee from Ashburton College has won the NZ Triple S Champs for 2018.  Her total score of 493.36 is the second highest ever score for this competion. Nikkita Cheesman from Longburn Adventist College was second after putting in a great final round 199.05 to jump from fourth to second place.  Despite strong competition, Lanelle Millar-McArthur, also from Ashburton College, shot well to retained third place.

Ashburton College (with 1924.97) won the team competition for the fourth year in a row, finishing an impressive 29 points ahead of 2nd place King's High School with Rangiora High School's Nr 1 team taking 3rd place.

A bit about the competition...

Junior shooters have been saying that there aren't enough regular secondary school competitions.

We know that the junior shooters:

  • love regular competition (each club night they are up at the ladder checking out who they are challenging or being challenged by)
  • love badges (all marksmen and rep badges are proudly worn on school uniforms and blazers)
  • do not get to shoot enough 20 shot targets

So, we've decided to do something about that. We've put together a competition for junior shooters that can be shot at all levels over the course of the season.

Who is running this?

The Brooklyn Smallbore Rifle Club (BSRC) is Wellington's largest smallbore shooting club. For a several years now, the BSRC has provided facilities, equipment and coaching for Wellington secondary school shooters. A number of these juniors are currently in, or have been through, the TSNZ Junior Development Squad (JDS) so we've seen what happens when they're given support and competition. We know there are also a number of other clubs out there doing the same thing and there are a large number of juniors being trained and shooting on a regular basis.

Who is eligible to shoot?

The Triple S Champs are open to competitors from any NZ Secondary School.

Is this a team or an individual thing?

Both! Every shooter enters an individual category first. Then, if 4 or 5 individual shooters at a school want to, they can put a team together. Schools can enter as many teams as they wish (of course, one shooter can only shoot for one team!).

What are the categories?

  • Master Grade
  • A Grade
  • B Grade
  • C Grade
  • D Grade
  • Ungraded

Teams can be made up of shooters from any grades (including ungraded). The winning teams will be the one with the highest scores.

How much does it cost?

There is just one $10 fee per shooter for entry in all 3 sections.

What are the sections?

 Overall Individual, Graded and Teams.

When do entries need to be in by?

Your entries and payments need to be in by Sunday 20th May 2018.  You can download the entry form here: 2018 SSS Champs Entry Form (right-click and download)

What do they shoot, and by when?

Each shooter will complete 3 x 10's and 1 x 20 (i.e. it's shot over 4 rounds), with each round in 2018 being shot as follows:

Round 1 10 shot card Completed by Sunday 10th June (Term 2)

Round 2 10 shot card Completed by Sunday 8th July (Term 2)

Round 3 10 shot card Completed by Sunday 5th August (Term 3)

Round 4 20 shot card Completed by Sunday 2nd September (Term 3)

Note: This competition is sanctioned by TSNZ and the NZ Secondary Schools Sports Council.

The prizes

At the end of the competition, badges and certificates will be awarded for:

  • the top 3 shooters in each individual category, and
  • the top 3 teams, and
  • the top 3 individual shooters.

Certificates will also be awarded to the top 3 schools in the team event.
